The insignificant cogwheel

ACM Queue has a Joel Spolsky interview. Choice quote that really strikes a chord:

"There's something really weird about being a little gear in a very large project and not being able to describe to anybody what you do, not really being able to influence the way things happen."

Sometimes it feel worse than that, because when things are going well your contribution looks insignificant, but when things fall apart they're suddenly that much more interested in accountability which, of course, falls squarely on you.
