ACM Queue has a
Joel Spolsky interview. Choice quote that really strikes a chord:
"There's something really weird about being a little gear in a very large project and not being able to describe to anybody what you do, not really being able to influence the way things happen."
Sometimes it feel worse than that, because when things are going well your contribution looks insignificant, but when things fall apart they're suddenly that much more interested in accountability which, of course, falls squarely on you.

每個辦公單位,各有一段辛酸。
很想為所有人解決所有問題。但是,進步是靠逐一解決問題就可以取得的嗎?總要有改革的時候。
先救火,後改革。

Got another mail worthy of a "WTF". Somebody in Human Resources must have read too much Dilbert:
[Name redacted] advised that after consultation with representatives of [the staff consultation committee], it was suggested to form 3 focus groups to following up on the areas with lowest scores in the last Staff Opinion Survey viz Training, Change Management and Job Satisfaction. [Name redacted] pointed out the last survey was conducted one year ago and that a new staff engagement survey with new tool was planned to commence in end August. The two surveys should be interfaced...
I don't know about you, but the message I got from that blob of text was that
more surveys will be conducted with different methodology until we get the favourable results we want.

Got this from IT Department today (emphasis mine):
Dear LAN users,
This email serves as a gentle reminder to all LAN account users
(Grateful if supervisors would circulate a copy to colleagues without e-mail access)
There is an update to the [password policy]:
B. An email will be sent to remind you if your password is not changed every 180 days.
Best regards,
ITS
If you don't have e-mail access anyway... ???
