In my office, the toilet paper rolls are from a certain local OEM brand called "Excel". The resemblance of their outer appearance with Microsoft Excel is uncanny, and even appears to be synchronised with the Microsoft Office 2007 upgrade that's happening in my organisation right now. Here's the proof:
![]() On the left is the old design. It's dark green, boring, linear and bland. Just like the Excel 2000 icon. On the right is the new design, introduced just this month. It's light green, playful, curvy and stylish. Just like the Excel 2007 icon. Using other metrics, we see more differences than similarities, though:

原來,真的有家族性格這回事。
昨晚,為同學的婚禮擔任副攝影師。由於已經有正式專業攝影師在場,保證最珍貴、最關鍵的畫面都已經入鏡,我的自由度就相對大了。所以,我給自己的任務就是:不管是否指定環節、台上還是台下,盡量捕捉歡樂笑面。 慢慢發現,兩檯主家席,我十居其九都在拍其中一檯。這還不止,這邊主家席的親戚,無論近親遠房,都喜歡搞氣氛,不時高呼「飲杯」、笑聲不絕。面對這樣可以無端「natural high」的賓客,攝影師的工作就很容易做。 另一邊呢,要錄得笑臉,卻得花點心思。要是你大搖大擺的拿著攝影機走過去,他們就自動繃緊起來,或向你展示標準的護照式笑容。唯有靜靜守候:關掉閃燈,從暗處對準放大,然後守株待兔。 發自內心的笑讓人美麗,但卻一閃即逝。昨晚用攝影機保存了這許許多多美麗時刻 - 這可以算是滿足感的來源吧。 Saturday, October 6. 2007知識份子

It used to be that projects got done, diseases got cured, and problems got solved. Now everything is managed.
The shift in vocabulary betrays the underlying attitude of the manager - he who manages something doesn't actually want it to have a definite ending. The perpetuality of the managed also ensures a continued role for the manager. Thus in managing, we are actually seeking the Confucian Middle Way - don't let the thing spin out of control, but don't resolve it completely either. Yet we fool ourselves by brandishing slogans such as "striving for excellence", "top quality" and "value for money". If I have to rewrite a generic core value for today's large organisations, it would be something like this: "Striving for mediocrity - tolerable quality at a grudgingly acceptable cost!" Monday, October 1. 2007集體催眠首先,仔細觀察下,大部份讀者的閱讀模式都是這樣的:頭條,迅速看一看;時事內頁,草草地翻過去算了;財經要細讀,尤其是專家的買賣貼士;體育不看也罷,因為這份報紙沒有獨家賭博內幕;還是娛樂版看得津津有味。 更讓人擔心的,就是大家都在閱讀同一份報紙,星期六唯一免費派發那份。就像大家都信奉同一宗教,在教堂裡人手一本聖經一樣。 腦海裡不禁浮現了一套陰謀論,發展下去可以成為小說橋段 - 邪惡的大企業為了鞏固自己的市場地位,看準了星期六這空檔,開辦了免費報紙。因為以免費為號召,於是人人都看,最後邪惡企業壟斷了人們的消息來源,並在字裡行間種下影響集體行為的催眠訊息。最初,邪惡企業只是利用這種影響力去干擾人們的消費模式,讓人們都「不知怎地」很喜歡該企業的產品。但是慢慢發展下去,邪惡企業被政治部招攬成為思想箝制的工具。自此,香港成為世界上數一數二的和諧城市,人人思想一致,沒有爭論... |
