I used to hate the term, "opportunity cost". Cost is supposed to have a definite value. So if you invested your only $1000 in some gadget and missed out on a cool IPO, how much is this supposed "opportunity cost"? I couldn't get past that uncertainty, and so I hated the idea. Sometimes I still do.
Now I hate the phrase, "exception that proves the rule". How exactly can an exception provide a logical proof to a rule? So William Hung is said to be an exception that proves the rule. What's the exception? He sings badly but he succeeded (for a short while) anyway. The rule is that you must sing really, really well to succeed. So he is an exception that reminds us of the rule. Where does the "prove" part come from?
